The Prince: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The Prince hand puppet wears a light blue doublet with a golden sash and a purple beret with two feathers above a youthful face. The soft fabric head weighs next to nothing; it is shaped by hand, embroidered by hand and finally painted by hand, so every prince has a face of his own. Children and adults handle the light figure equally well. It is made in a Czech workshop that crafts its figures by hand.
The prince is rescuer and bridegroom in one. He frees the princess at the end, but on the Punch and Judy stage he rarely manages that on his own. More often than not he is the one who asks for help, because courtesy and courage are not enough against wizards and robbers. That is exactly what makes him playable: a prince who asks draws the children into the play, since they usually know more than he does. For children he is the character who shows that asking for help is allowed.
Did you know that the Brothers Grimm hardly ever use the word prince? In their tales the character is the king's son, from The Frog King to Sleeping Beauty. The German word Prinz was borrowed from French; the Grimms kept the older native term. On the puppet stage the character is simply der Prinz – the word that has belonged to everyday German ever since the seventeenth century.
