Four-piece hand puppet set by munabo. The set holds three fairy helpers in blue, yellow and red, each with white wings and a star wand. The fourth figure is a queen in a green gown with a crown. The very light head is polystyrene with a fabric cover, which makes the figures easy to handle, and the faces are artistically hand-painted. In universal size the four hand puppets fit adults and children alike; they are made in a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic.
The set was developed together with a clinical speech and language therapist for the method devised by the psychologist Daniil Elkonin. The three primary colours give the exercise its structure: children match words, pictures or colours to the helpers. The queen can be used as the counterpart who sets the task or receives the result. A sound analysis becomes a game with four characters, and it works as well in speech therapy as in a nursery group or at home while learning to read.
Did you know that the Elkonin method works with boxes and counters? In the 1960s Elkonin devised a procedure for children who do not yet know any letters. For every sound they hear in a word, they push one counter into a box. These Elkonin boxes are now part of reading support around the world. The four figures give the exercise someone to answer to: whatever the child picks out goes to the queen.
