Four animals in one bag, and the next tree stump becomes the stage: the Folkmanis Great Smoky Mountains Finger Puppet set travels to the hills, on holiday or into the nursery. The colourful canvas case holds a red salamander, an American black bear, a skunk and a red fox, together with species information.
The Great Smoky Mountains straddle the border of Tennessee and North Carolina and take their name from the bluish haze the forests give off on humid days. Over a short distance the land climbs from valley floor to more than 2,000 metres, so southern and far northern species live side by side here. The red salamander (Pseudotriton ruber) keeps to cold spring-fed streams and breathes entirely through its skin and the lining of its mouth, having no lungs at all. On the wooded slopes above, black bear, skunk and red fox share the ground; the national park alone holds around 1,500 black bears.
Did you know these mountains are called the salamander capital of the world? Some thirty species occur within the park, more than in any comparable area on earth. Most of them are lungless and spend their whole lives close to the stream where they hatched.
