The Chartreux (Felis catus, breed Chartreux) is one of Europe's oldest pedigree cats and originates from France. Its name likely derives from the blue-grey robes worn by Carthusian monks, though no direct link to the order has been proven. The breed's most striking feature is its dense, water-repellent double coat with a woolly texture reminiscent of sheepskin. Genetically, the Chartreux is a black cat — a so-called dilution gene lightens the black pigment to blue-grey. Adults weigh between four and seven kilogrammes and are known for being calm, affectionate and remarkably devoted to their owners. In France they carry the nickname "dog-cat" because they follow their people around and can even learn small tricks.
