The desert rain frog (Breviceps macrops) lives in a narrow coastal belt running from southern Namibia into north-western South Africa. Rain hardly ever falls there, yet sea fog reaches the shore on more than a hundred nights a year. By day it shuffles backwards into the damp sand and only surfaces once darkness has set in. Beetles, moths and termites make up its diet. Its body is round as a ball and its legs are so short that it cannot hop at all, but walks instead. Large dark eyes and translucent belly skin are among its adaptations to life in half-light.
Did you know that this frog was never a tadpole? Rain frogs lay their eggs in a moist chamber in the sand, and out of them hatch fully formed froglets only a few millimetres long. There is simply no standing water in their homeland where tadpoles could grow up.
